Most riders should buy cro-mo bars. That is the short answer, and I stand behind it after decades of building race parts and seeing what comes back broken. Carbon is excellent and we build a very good one, but it solves a narrow problem for a narrow group of riders. The real decision is not which material is better. It is how much weight you need to lose, how hard you crash, and whether you own a torque wrench.

What cro-mo gives you on the track

Every Supercross cro-mo bar starts as seamless 4130 tubing, gets welded, then gets a full post-weld heat treatment. That last step is the one people skip past on a spec sheet and the one that matters most. Welding leaves the material around the joint softer than the tube it came from, and heat treating the finished bar brings it back to a consistent strength so the weld zone is not the weak link. The diamond knurling under the clamp does the rest, giving the stem faces something to bite so the bar stays put at the correct torque.

On track, cro-mo has a ride quality a lot of fast riders genuinely prefer. It has a small amount of controlled give. You feel the front tire loading in a turn, and it takes the sharp edge off rough rollers without going vague. Plenty of riders who could afford carbon run cro-mo because they like the feedback. It is not the budget shelf. It is a legitimate race bar.

The Flatline Pro Bar at $99.95 is the original FLAT bend pro bar and still our benchmark. The Straight 8 Pro Bar is $99.95 in a different bend. For height, the HUGE Pro Bar at $79.95 sits a quarter inch taller than the Flat series and the MASSIVE Pro Bar at $99.95 a half inch taller. Smaller riders want the Lil' Flatty, cruiser riders the Flat 6 or Straight 6, both $99.95. Chrome pro bars are $149.95, and our LT-A alloy bars for younger racers are $59.95, with the Mini at 24 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall.

What carbon gives you on the track

Two things, and both are real: weight and vibration damping.

The weight comes off the worst possible place, which is why it is worth paying for. The bar sits at the top of the front end, out at the ends of your reach, and every ounce there is an ounce you fight when you throw the bike into a turn or pull the front wheel up. That changes how the bike feels far more than the same weight off a seat post.

The damping is what wins races on day three. Carbon absorbs high-frequency vibration in a way steel does not, so a full national weekend on a rough track costs you less arm pump and less hand fatigue. A rider doing ten hard laps a day for three days feels it. A rider racing one night a week mostly does not.

The crash and durability conversation, honestly

Cro-mo bends before it breaks. Go down hard in a first-turn pileup and a cro-mo bar will usually tweak. You can see it, you can feel it, and in most cases you finish the night and replace it during the week. It also survives what is not even racing, like the bar loaded sideways under a pile of bikes in the truck.

Carbon does not work that way. It is extremely strong in the directions it was designed to be strong, and it does not bend to warn you. A hard impact can crush fibers inside the wall and leave the outside looking perfect. The bar feels fine in the pits and then lets go on a gate start two weeks later. That is how the material behaves, and anyone selling you carbon who does not tell you so is doing you a disservice.

So the carbon rule is simple. Any time the bar takes a real hit, check it for cracks, whitening, soft spots, or any place that sounds dull when you tap along it with a coin. Any doubt at all, replace it. A $249.95 bar is cheaper than a broken collarbone. If you crash a lot, or you are buying for a rider who does, cro-mo is the right call. Not a compromise, the correct tool.

Torque and installation: carbon does not forgive

More carbon bars are killed by a wrench than by a crash. Over-tighten a stem on a carbon bar and it cracks, usually under the clamp where you cannot see it. Use a torque wrench. Not a feel, not "snug plus a quarter turn," not an Allen key with a pipe on it.

Carbon also needs assembly paste on every carbon-to-alloy surface. The compound has fine grit suspended in it that grips the two parts together, so the clamp holds at a lower torque instead of a higher one. Grip without crushing the tube. Here is the line I will not soften. A rider who will not own a torque wrench should not be on carbon bars. That is not gatekeeping, it is what the material requires. A $40 torque wrench protects a $249.95 bar and the rider holding it.

Rise and width matter more than material

Bars are one of the few parts on a race bike where personal fit beats the spec sheet. A rider on the wrong rise in carbon is slower than the same rider on the right rise in cro-mo.

Rise sets where your chest and shoulders sit at the gate. Too low and you are cramped over the front end, your weight goes forward, and you fight the bike out of the gate. Too high and you sit back, the front end gets light, and you lose front-wheel bite in the turns. The right rise puts your elbows up and out with your weight centered where you can drive the pedals.

Start from what you ride now and move in small steps, which is how our rise families are built. Want a touch more room than the Flatline bend? The HUGE is a quarter inch taller. Need a real change? The MASSIVE is a half inch taller. If the Flatline is close but too big for your body, the Lil' Flatty is that bend scaled down. Frame size ties in too, since a longer top tube or a shorter stem wants a little more rise.

Width is about steering control. Wider gives you more control at low speed and in the air and opens your chest for breathing. Narrower is quicker to react in tight lanes. If you trim a bar, take the same amount off each end and leave enough outside the clamp for grips and levers. Cro-mo cuts fine with a tubing cutter or a fine-tooth saw and a guide. On carbon, do not freelance it: carbon-specific blade, support the tube, go slow.

Who should buy which

Novice and intermediate racers, buy cro-mo. You are still developing, still crashing, and your bike is still changing. The Flatline Pro Bar at $99.95 is the one I would hand you. Mini and junior riders still growing belong on the LT-A alloy bars at $59.95.

For expert-class racers chasing national points, with a parent or mechanic who maintains the bike properly, the Expert carbon at $189.95 or Junior carbon at $129.95 is a legitimate upgrade. Only do it if the torque wrench is in the pit box. Elite and pro riders racing multiple days at a time, buy the Carbon Pro Bar at $249.95. That is the rider it was built for.

Cruiser riders can take their pick between the Flat 6 and Straight 6 cro-mo bars at $99.95 and the 6 inch Pro Cruiser carbon. And if your bike lives in a truck bed under six other bikes, stay on cro-mo regardless of budget.

My recommendation

Buy the Flatline Pro Bar at $99.95. For the large majority of riders that is the right bar, and it is the one I would put on my own bike without thinking twice. Take the $150 you did not spend and put it into tires, a good torque wrench, and gate practice.

Go carbon when two things are true at once: a full weekend of motos wears you down, and you maintain your own bike to a spec. When both are true, the Carbon Pro Bar is worth every dollar of the $249.95 and I will tell you to buy it. When only one is true, stay on cro-mo. Either way, get the rise right before you worry about material.

Frequently asked questions

How much lighter is a carbon BMX bar than a cro-mo bar?

Enough that you notice it the first time you pick the bike up. Where the weight comes from matters more than the number. Bar weight sits high and wide, so taking it off changes how the bike responds far more than the same weight off a seat post.

Are carbon bars safe for BMX racing?

Yes, when they are installed to spec and inspected after impacts. Our carbon bars are built for BMX race loads and elite riders race them at the highest level of the sport. The question is really about the install: torque to spec, use carbon paste, check the bar after any real hit.

What torque do I use on a BMX handlebar clamp?

Pro BMX bar clamp is 10 Nm, or 7 ft-lbs. Expert and Junior bar clamps are 6 Nm, or 4 ft-lbs. A carbon expander plug is 6 to 7 Nm. Tighten faceplate bolts in a cross pattern in small increments so the gaps stay even, then re-check after your first ride.

Can I reuse a carbon bar after a crash?

Only after you have inspected it and found nothing. Look for cracks, whitened or dull areas, any soft spot, and tap along the bar with a coin listening for a sharp ring turning into a dull thud. Check the clamp area and the bends closely. Any doubt, replace it.

Do cro-mo bars really flex, and is that bad?

They have a small amount of controlled give, and no, it is not bad. It is part of why plenty of very fast riders choose cro-mo on purpose. That give takes the sharp edge off rough sections and tells you what the front tire is doing. Heat treating after welding is what keeps it controlled season after season.
