AMX250 Pro XL

1995–2000

The SX250 reborn in aluminum — AMX stood for Aluminum Motocross.

When aluminum came for BMX racing, Supercross didn't follow the pack. The AMX250 turned the SX250 into the Aluminum Motocross — built from high-ceramic 6013 blends while most of the industry ran standard 6061 T-6.

The Story

The six-bar rear end that fixed gate flex in steel carried straight into aluminum. The AMX250 Pro XL kept the lowered twin seat stays and the geometry riders already trusted, in a frame that was lighter and faster reacting.

The alloy was the story. Supercross specified high-ceramic 6013 blends rather than the common 6061 T-6 — a real materials advantage at a time when most aluminum BMX frames were built to a price. The geometry matched the SX250, updated with a 1-1/8" threadless head tube, a 1-1/4" seatmast, and a 26.8 mm seatpost. Serial numbers were stamped on the left rear dropout, a convention Supercross still honors on its anniversary frames today.

Powdercoating was done in house, so beyond the core colors — red, blue, yellow, orange, green, black, and brown — plenty of wild one-off colors left the building. A frame and fork set ran $399. By 1997, refinements to wall thickness and tube diameters were ongoing and Supercross was producing around 500 frames a month across the AMX and SX lines.

Still alive: the AMX250 returned in 2024 as the AMX250 35 Year Anniversary frame — “The Six Bar” — with serials in the original 250XL001 format on the left rear dropout.
