Eric Jones SX400 Moto Monster

1994

The XXXL frame built for AA Pro Eric Jones — who tried aluminum first and asked for cro-mo.

The first aluminum frame Supercross ever prototyped was an XXXL built for AA Pro Eric Jones. Eric rode it, preferred cro-mo — and the Moto Monster shipped as a chromoly XXXL instead.

The Story

Eric Jones was Supercross's AA Pro in 1994, and he needed a bigger frame than the line offered. Supercross built him the company's first-ever aluminum prototype in a new XXXL size. He preferred the feel of steel, so the production frame — the Moto Monster — was built in cro-mo, and the aluminum work fed directly into the AMX line that followed.

The Moto Monster was the first Supercross frame with a 22.5" top tube, paired with a 17" rear triangle and a 74.5° head angle. Cecil Johns and Eric Jones helped come up with the name. Eric left the team to move to Hawaii after a few good AA Pro wins, and the Moto Monster XXXL held its spot in the 1995 lineup alongside the full SX range.

Footnote in aluminum history: the rejected Eric Jones aluminum prototype was the seed of the AMX series — the frames that took Supercross into high-ceramic 6013 alloy.
